COLUMBUS, OHIO—Champion Development has received final approval to build its first apartment community from the ground up, named Sunbury Pointe in Sunbury, Ohio.

The 146-unit community will be built on a 12.5-acre site that Champion purchased in February at the South Miller Drive and Fairland Drive intersection, behind the Sunbury Mills Plaza.

“We searched for two years for the perfect site of our first development project,” Brian Yeager, Champion’s president and CEO, said. “When we found land in Sunbury, we simply couldn’t pass it up.”

Sunbury Pointe will consist of 98 town homes, 30 of them three-bedroom and 68 two-bedroom, as well as 48 two-bedroom garden apartments. Target rents will range from $1,100 a month to $1,450 a month.

“Our plan for Sunbury Pointe was a collaborative effort, with input from Sunbury residents,” Yeager said. “We are looking forward to becoming a part of the Sunbury community and we are dedicated to building a first-class multi-family project that we all can be proud of.”

Champion has acquired nearly 5,000 apartments across Central Ohio since it opened for business in 2010, but this will be the first community that they build and brand as their own from the foundation.

“We’ve worked hard with the Sunbury consulting engineer and area residents,” said Dan Hunter, Champion’s chief investment officer. “We have high-end finishes; this will be more like a condominium complex than an apartment project.”

Hunter said Champion plans to announce its construction management company and hopes to break ground in November, weather permitting.
