The Champion Companies Breaks Ground on Worthington Apartment Project
WORTHINGTON, OH – The Champion Companies, a multi-family investment, development and management firm in Central Ohio, is set to begin construction of its newest apartment community, The Retreat at Crosswoods. An official groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 24, 2024, to kick off the project, which will consist of 395 Class A apartments located at 400 E. Campus View Blvd. in the Crosswoods neighborhood north of Columbus.
The Retreat at Crosswoods will repurpose a 12-acre site which formerly housed the offices of Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities. The vacant and obsolete office building was torn down earlier this year in preparation for Champion’s fifth development project.
“We think we’re adding a lot of value to the area by replacing a vacant 40-year-old office building with a Class A apartment community that will fill a huge housing demand in that submarket,” Chairman and CEO Brian Yeager, said.
The Retreat at Crosswoods will consist of three buildings, a mix of three and four stories tall, and will offer 229 two-bedroom and 166 one-bedroom apartments. The community, which is located in the desirable Worthington School District, will feature a state-of-the-art clubhouse with a co-working space, coffee bar and 24-hour fitness center. Residents will also enjoy a resort-style pool, outdoor lounge and grilling area, firepit, dog park and pickleball courts.
The development will fortify Champion’s already strong presence in the Worthington submarket, and will provide needed housing units to a region that attracts renters due to its proximity to the Polaris area, as well as large employers including JP Morgan Chase, Worthington Enterprises and Mettler Toledo. The development is expected to take around 21 months to complete, with a tentative opening scheduled for Spring 2026.
The development of The Retreat at Crosswoods will further Champion’s commitment to bring affordable housing options to Central Ohio. The project is located in a Columbus community reinvestment area, which will require Champion to hold 10% of the units for renters at 80% of the area median income and 10% for those at 60% of the area median income.
“The Champion Companies wants to be a part of the solution when it comes to housing affordability in Central Ohio,” Yeager said. “This project will help remove common barriers for today’s renter and provide a luxury apartment home they can be proud of.”
